Drapers Top 100 2017 – 18. Ben Lewis, chief executive, River Island

Ben Lewis has been steering a steady ship at River Island over the past 12 months. Trading has been stable despite the UK’s uncertain economic outlook – turnover was up 4% to £970.5m for the year to 31 December, although its operating profit fell 7% to £135.7m as it invested in expanding its product ranges. As part of this strategy, it has been expanding its menswear category and updated the tailoring offer for 2017.

It has also ploughed money into improving its digital proposition and expanding its portfolio of more than 310 stores. Lewis has said he is “passionate” about providing a differentiated experience for River Island’s customers, whether through its product or experimenting with new technology online and in stores.
