Contemporary Footwear Indicator, September 13 2014

What’s selling now in the world of Contemporary footwear?

Asif Patel Director of Dr Kruger in Preston

“Converse’s classic low ox in white (£44.99) is by far our bestseller, although grey and navy shades are also popular. Another important brand is Toms (£40), which sells really well in white, navy, black, pink and red. Back-to-school sales have given us a boost, but footfall has been disrupted by roadworks in the town centre.”

Katie Blundell Owner of Unique Feet in Buxton, Derbyshire

“This summer we’ve benefited from the good publicity around Birkenstock, which resulted in increased demand for the Gizeh toe-post style and Arizona two-strap sandals (both £50), especially in stone and silver. As autumn approaches H by Hudson leather ankle boots in tan or beige (£159) and Ugg ankle boots in black and chocolate brown (£150) are proving popular.”

Tessa Woolmer Assistant manager at Du Barry in Topsham, Exeter

“Heavenly Feet synthetic ankle boots (£39 to £60) are really popular with customers, especially in bright shades of raspberry and teal. As autumn approaches, heeled ankle boots tend to sell, along with quirky flat boots and wedge styles. For example, Tamaris is doing really well for us at the moment, especially the black leather ankle boots (£59.95) and brown or black leather pumps with a small wedge heel (£65).”

Nadia Casimir Owner of Badger in Brighton

“Our top-selling footwear brand is Camper, especially the brogues (£110) and Chelsea boots (£130). The funky animal-print trainer by Ilse Jacobsen (£85) has also been extremely popular, along with The Frye Company’s heeled Chelsea boot (£250). As our summer Sale has just finished, we are starting to focus on autumn 14 product.”

Simon Holmes Owner of Skintrade in Newport, Isle of Wight

“Vans Authentic (£47) in white and patterned styles is our top-selling brand, although we have also seen a lot of demand for Fly London boots (£115 to £140). The Isle of Wight Festival brings so many tourists to the island, driving demand for our Hunter wellies (£89 to £100), especially the matt-finish style. Generally sales are up on last season, driven by the good weather.”

Irene Astley Owner of Imelda’s in Norwich

“Recently we opened a concession for Irregular Choice, and it has been performing really well across the board, from flats, heels and knee-high boots (£175 to £190). Fly London always sells well, especially shoes and ankle boots (£80 to £90). A back-to-work mentality is fuelling demand for transitional footwear, such as Vagabond’s simple black shoes and chunky pumps (£60 to £70). On September 1, we received the full collection of Elia B’s Italian leather brogues, knee-high jodhpur boots and patent mock-croc pumps (£125 to £175), and it’s already been well received.”

Paul Tellett Manager of Cayman Reef in Coalville, Leicestershire

“Sales are up 4.6% from last season, so things are great. Brands with longevity are central to our buying policy - we don’t go for anything that’s going to be a flash in the pan. The K-Swiss Rinzler trainers (£69.99) are flying off our shelves. Our customers also love the Switch by Boxfresh (£69.99).”

Peter Frost Manager of Signature 2 in Aberdeen

“We predict strong sales this season once the cold sets in. We are seeing a good response to the Ted Baker Torsdi boots (£130) in black and brown, as well as Boss Orange trainers (£120). We tend to put a 2.5 to 2.6 mark-up on our products.”

David Bailey Store manager of Friary Shoes in Lichfield, Staffordshire

“We are looking forward to the weather changing and have had a good start to September. Paolo Vandini Horatio brogues (£120) and the Boss Orange Voletto boot (£179) are selling strongly among our loyal customer base, which ranges from late teens to 60 year olds. The local retail environment has experienced some ups and downs, with some good shops opening recently, while others have been forced to close.”

Paul Dodd Owner of Elements Clothing in Norwich

“Footwear sales are stable for us at the moment. Customers are really responding well to the Paolo Vandini Player leather boots (£85) and smart high-shine leather boots from Jeffery-West (£180), as well as Hub’s Subway fur-lined boots in brown and tan (£95).”

Nicola Fawkes Store manager of Pavilion Clothing in Cardiff

“Red Wing shoes are steady sellers, such as the Chukka 3141 boot (£179) and classic 875 6-inch boot (£229). Adidas Gazelle and Hamburg (both £70) are flying out of the store, as we’ve had a very good summer with lots of trainer sales. We are also seeing strong demand for Grenson (£199 to £205) and Clarks Originals (£69 to £85).”

Layth Sami Co-manager of Cooshti in Bristol

“New Balance is very popular right now (£125 to £140), while Nike’s Huarache (£79.99 to £89.99) and Huarache Light (£89.99) has gone down extremely well with 16 to 25-year-olds. Sales have also surged for the Adidas ZX Flux (£80). Students strengthened our trade during the long summer break, but now we are waiting for the cooler weather to catch up with our autumn 14 stock.”

Laura Tregoning Manager of Scorpio in Durham

“Dr Martens’ 3989 brogue (£110) and the Horatio by Paolo Vandini (£99) are selling really well. Canvas shoes such as Converse and Vans (both range from £45 to £55), in shades of red, navy, black and white have performed well over the summer. We’ve just introduced Wrangler boots (£65 to £75), as well as trainers and boots from new brand Mustang (£55 to £70), which is looking promising. We keep our customers informed via email about new brands arriving in store.”
