I’ve worked with Helen Clinch and Myra Nigris of Hemyca for a few seasons and we had a chance to talk about their involvement with Age UK and their plans for London Fashion Week.
Can you tell me about Hemyca?
We are inspired by architecture, beautiful lines and silhouettes, historical female figures and corset inspired shapes which we translate into our garments and in all our collections there is a lighter and a darker side. We often use Menswear classic tailoring fabrics, which create a beautiful drape on the body whilst holding the shape and structure, emphasis on the waistline is pivotal to create a beautiful silhouette. We are passionate about tailoring and creating contemporary yet wearable garments for all women no matter their shape, size or age, it is about making women feel amazing and confident.
What are you doing for LFW?
We have two presentations during LFW this season! The first one is at Ecoluxe -18th - 19th September 2011 at Kingsway Hall, Covent Garden in collaboration with the Centre for Sustainable Fashion. We have also been selected to showcase at Wool Modern Exhibition at La Galleria, Pall Mall on the 21st September, sponsored by Woolmark.
When did you start Hemyca?
We met during our studies at the London College of Fashion where we formed a strong bond, sharing a mutual vision for innovative high-quality contemporary design. Our story is quite unique, in fact, we could have been working in completely separate rooms, but we came up always with the same concept and designs. Our final collections could have been merged into one! After University we decided to use this bond and start our own brand in 2006 and we have been growing from strength to strength ever since
How did you get involved in Age UK?
Age UK have recently re-branded their stores and were looking for an innovative way to connect to a new audience and raise vital funds for the charity. The team at Age UK wanted to connect with a contemporary brand which has an ethical background and whose products are accessible to women of all ages - it really was a natural fit for us as our brands share the same vision of charity and local community and ethics at the heart of the company. Many companies go down the route of a limited edition t-shirt or tote bag but we wanted to do something different and unique, an item which is accessible to all women and can be cherished, which really reflects our brand spirit, our first ever limited edition handbag was perfect!
You’ve recently started an Organic Tailoring range, can you tell us about this range?
We are passionate about sustainable clothing and manufacture our RTW line in the UK with a bespoke Atelier Service designed and made in our Elizabeth Street studio in the heart of London! We source all of our materials from the UK and Italy. We also offer an Organic Tailoring range working with our fabric suppliers and the Centre for Sustainable Fashion to ensure the highest ethical and sustainable standards are met.
Hemyca is stocked at Corniche, Renegade-Marmalade, Russell Street Causeway Bay, Eco1start.com, Rous Iland and Darcy B.
