What drapers saw…
‘tis (still) the season to be jolly…
Some of retail’s top names were at supplier Whispering Smith’s belated Christmas party last week, including Blue Inc boss Steven Cohen, Primark menswear buyer Emma Davenport (centre left) and trainee buyer Kevin Ma (right), pictured with Drapers’ James Knowles and the supplier’s account manager Becky Kilbourne.
Padders celebrates 100 years
Footwear firm Padders is celebrating its centenary with a nod to Thomas Groocock’s original footwear manufacturing business, which opened its doors in 1914 in Rothwell, Northamptonshire. The family-run company launched its own brand, Padders, in 1982 specialising in the PU comfort market, although throughout the decades the business has seen many changes, from supplying military footwear to winkle-pickers and platform shoes. Here’s to the next 100!
A roomful of talent
The industry’s stars of tomorrow descended on the Haymarket Hotel near Trafalgar Square last week for Drapers’ annual dinner to celebrate our Next Generation 30 under 30 for 2014, from businesses as diverse as Marks & Spencer to Puma.
Say cheese everyone!
Life and soul of the party
Danish menswear brand Soulland hosted the must-visit party of Copenhagen Fashion Week at dancing hot spot Sunday Club. Drapers’ Graeme Moran joined buyers Helen Stringer and Julia Neill from Urban Outfitters and Amelia Penfold from London’s The Shop at Bluebird to represent the UK among a sea of beautiful blonde Danes.
Open house at Amanda Wakeley’s
It was literally a night on the town last week at the launch party for Amanda Wakeley’s flagship, which occupies a townhouse in Mayfair. Designer Wakeley, pictured with Harold Tillman, and her chief executive Sagra Maceira de Rosen (right) guided guests including Greg Rusedski, Tracey Emin and Kristina Blahnik (left with Rosen), niece of footwear designer Manolo, around the store.
West country style
Students from City of Bristol College and the University of the West of England exhibited designs at the launch of the city’s Style Forum, which brings together local employers and suppliers to share knowledge and training. Harvey Nichols Bristol general manager Louise Masson and ex-model Kari-Ann Jagger offered industry insights at Berwick Lodge hotel.
