Black Friday steals Christmas spend

Retail sales slowed at the end of 2018 with non-food spend dropping 1.1% in December from November, as shoppers brought forward Christmas shopping to the Black Friday Sales.

Historical figures show that the quantity bought in December has been consistently lower than November since 2015, according to The Office for National Statistics.

Year-on-year the total amount spent on non-food in December grew just 0.7%.

Total retail figures for the last three months of 2018 show the quantity bought dropped 0.2% on 2017.

The whole of 2018 saw growth of 2.7% from the year before, a slowdown from peak growth in 2016 of 4.7%.

Online retailing accounted for 20% of all sales in December.

  • What brands and retailers now need to do stop the Black Friday nonsense and get back to full price retailing until after Xmas, as all the customers are doing is bringing their shopping forward. People still have to shop at some point, whether there is a sale on or not, so why make life difficult?

  • If we went back to a Traditional November - which was always a busy month - as was December, then with sales in January and then new product in February, everyone would know where they are and it would be better for all. Or is that too sensible?
