Businesses including Amazon and John Lewis outline Brexit fears

Retailers Amazon and John Lewis are amongst a number of businesses to have voiced concerns to the government about Britain’s departure from the European Union.

In documents submitted to the Home Office as part of a consultation about immigration policy post-Brexit, tech giant Amazon warned the government that restrictions on hiring EU nationals would hit the retail and logistic sectors.

Amazon said: “While Amazon is committed to continued investment in the UK, uncertainty as to our businessess’ ability to remain operational and successful in the UK, particularly during peak periods, is a very high concern for the company.”

John Lewis’s submission is said to have been removed from the Home Office’s website, but the retailer told the government that workers from the EU ‘played an integral role’, according to This is Money.

  • Prices go up. Service goes down.

At least Amazon is paying taxes. Oh wait...

  • Automate more and pay more for local recruitment.
The never-ending supply of cheap labour, which is unable to contribute to the financing of the infrastructure required to support population growth, must come to an end.
The consequences of not doing so will consign the UK to remaining a low wage, over-populated, socially unbalanced, unproductive society for even more years than will already be the case.

  • Was going to post a comment on here but the above has pretty much taken the words right out of my mouth, i will just add that cheap labour is only contributing to big business, if costs have to go up for more local recruitment then so be it, we need to get back to growth that's based on quality on many levels otherwise we continue in a downward spiral.
