Capsule, the global trade show for premium brands and directional designers, has cancelled its German edition in January blaming a clash of dates between Berlin’s Fashion Week and New York Men’s Market.
The show, which featured brands such as Lazy Oaf, Lightning Bolt and Ivy Prepster at its Berlin edition last month, is expected to return to the German capital for summer 2015.
The dates have yet to be released for New York Men’s Market, but Capsule showed during the New York event this year on January 21-22.
Capsule said it still intends to go ahead with its July edition in Berlin.
Capsule co-founder Deidre Maloney told Drapers that the primary reason for skipping Berlin this coming January is that it directly overlaps with its New York Men’s Market dates.
“In speaking with our customers, many of whom do both markets, there was a clear consensus to sit Berlin out and focus on the larger New York market.Unless the Berlin market gains importance for our consumers, New York will win every time. Berlin has been a good secondary market to places like NY, Paris and London for brands to find new customers. However, unlike these primary markets, it has not been deemed “unmissable” yet.”
The move by Capsule comes weeks after Bread & Butter revealed it would be moving its January show from Berlin to Barcelona next year. The Spanish edition will run on January 8-10 at the Fira de Barcelona grounds. It will continue to show in Berlin in the summer while its first Seoul show will take place from September 3-5 2015.
Capsule takes place 12 times a year in New York, Paris, Berlin and Las Vegas.
Capsule Paris Men’s, Capsule Las Vegas and both editions of the Capsule Women’s shows will remain on the calendar as scheduled, the show said.
Capsule will release dates and locations for all autumn/winter 2015 shows after the current season concludes in September. Capsule Berlin debuted in July 2011.
