Editor's Comment: Don’t forget to celebrate UK fashion's successes

When in the midst of challenging times, it can feel like a constant battle to keep persevering to stay afloat. It is often easy to brush over small successes and forget to celebrate all of this industry’s ongoing achievements.

This week, following a very successful London Fashion Week, we want to celebrate the UK fashion industry.

LFW hosted some of the best UK talent, from start-up brands to established names. Recognised the world over, this season’s shows were bold and creative, but also commercial, and strong trends came in the form of animal prints, heritage patterns and vibrant colours. Designers, whether born here, educated here or based here, successfully showcased the exciting and diverse creativity that this country has to offer.

But it is not just designers we should be celebrating. The UK still has a thriving manufacturing hub as highlighted in our interview this week with Mustafa Fuat, director of luxury womenswear manufacturer Gosha London. Working with designers including Roland Mouret and Amanda Wakeley, Fuat describes how he has battled through hard times with determination, passion and entrepreneurial spirit. He is now imploring the industry to celebrate and recognise UK manufacturing to keep this sector alive and encourage the next generation to see it as a skilled and rewarding career opportunity.  

We also take a look at the UK textile mills that are evolving to embrace the potential opportunities Brexit could bring, and join heritage US sportwear brand Champion in celebrating its 100th anniversary.

On the high street, Primark expects another set of good results as it continues to show that despite not having a transactional website, it has still embraced digital to drive footfall and sales via social media initiatives and collaborations with influencers.

Does the industry continue to be challenging? Yes. Is the market landscape evolving with new multichannel and consumer behaviour challenges? Absolutely. And on top of this, the Brexit conundrum continues with no sense of clarity in sight. But this industry is still thriving. Let’s not forget to celebrate success – there is plenty out there.
