Goodwin Smith owner buys Bells Shoes website

Redfoot Shoes, owner of men’s footwear brand Goodwin Smith, has acquired the website, stock, and intellectual property of independent footwear business Bells Shoes.

In March, Bells Shoes said it was winding down its online operations after it failed to agree new terms with Clarks, which affected its ability to stock and sell the brand online.

At the time, around 95% of Bells Shoes’ turnover came from online sales. Clarks said it had offered extended support to Bells running into 2019 as it transitioned its business away.

The Bells Shoes website will run as separate division of Redfoot Shoes, under managing director of Redfoot and Goodwin Smith, Tim Smith.

Smith told Drapers there were synergies between the Redfoot operation and Bells across sourcing, marketing, customer service, administration, IT, warehousing and distribution.

He said he was hiring 10 new members of staff and intended to “invest heavily” in the social media and online presence of Bells.

The Bells shop, based in Buxton, was not included in the deal and will continue to be owned and run by its owners the Martin family, under the new name Bells of Buxton.

Men’s and women’s footwear brand Redfoot Shoes is owned and run by the fourth generation of the Smith family, who have been making footwear in Rossendale, Lancashire since in 1928.
