Kidswear indie brand Kids Cavern is opening a 15,000 sq ft store in Liverpool’s Metquarter shopping centre this summer as part of expansion plans.
The retailer, owned by founders Danny and Tracey Shelvey, is relocating from its 4,000 sq ft Cavern Walks location to the shopping centre and will stock over 120 brands including Gucci, Givenchy, Burberry, Armani, Lanvin, Dsquared, Moncler and Hugo Boss.
Danny Shelvey told Drapers the new retail space, which will open at the end of July or start of August in time for the autumn season, will be a “mini department store quite unlike anything else in the country.”
Shelvey said the business had “outgrown” its Cavern Walks store, which will close to coincide with the move. Its other Kirkby store will remain open, with talks about a further store in Manchester’s Trafford Centre ongoing.
The store will comprise of a separate babywear and footwear space, an American style soda and dessert bar, and a barber’s chair. It will also have a focus on kids’ leisurewear, hosting brands including Adidas, Under Armour and Jack Wolfskin.
“We want a wow factor, and something that’s never been seen before,” said Shelvey.
A total of 10,000 sq ft of the floor space will be used for retail, with 5,000 sq ft set aside for office admin and its online operation, which Shelvey said had shown “phenomenal growth, increasing from a “fraction” of sales a couple of years ago to 20-25% of total sales.
“We started the business from a market stall in Liverpool almost 30 years ago now. Some good buying, hard work, great people working with us, and our brand-hungry locals are part and parcel of our success,” said Shelvey.
“It’s the right move for Kids Cavern as we can take on more brands. We’re bucking the trend, we have customers from all over the north west and beyond, even Ireland.
“There will always be an excuse about why people aren’t doing well but we just get on with it and do what we do best.”
