Christmas ad offsets sales dip at John Lewis

Like-for-like fashion sales at John Lewis fell by 0.9% in the week to 17 November due to mild weather at the start of the week.

Total sales across the department store chain were down 6.8%. However, John Lewis called it “a week of two halves” after the release of its Christmas advert on Thursday significantly boosted sales.

Price matched Black Friday deals on Friday and Saturday also led to a late upturn of sales.

John Lewis & Partners, which also includes Waitrose, posted sales of £237.72m, down 4% on the same week last year.
