Newquay-based womenswear independent Roo’s Beach has launched menswear for the first time.
The store, which opened in 2003, was refitted in January increasing its size by a third. The new menswear section launched at the end of September featuring five brands; Rhythm, Portuguese Flannel, Albam, Levi’s Made and Crafted and Lee, to create a capsule collection for male customers.
Speaking to Drapers, owner Roo Cross, said: “I think the way that men shop, they don’t want too much choice. They want a small curated edit that they can trust. We hope that guys will buy into the brands that we have and will come back to update their wardrobes each season with a new colourway of their favourite styles.”
The store launched menswear following demand from shoppers: “People have always bought presents from the [men’s accessories] Stance range leading up to Christmas which prompted a lot of requests for year-round menswear.”
Online trading has been a success for the business this year, with sales up 45% year on year. Trading in general is up 20% on 2017.
Looking forward, Cross is optimistic for the new venture.
“It will take two or three seasons for people to really know what we’re doing and to work out what we’re missing in the collection, but I feel really excited as it just fits so naturally into the store.
“In and around Newquay there are great surf shops but nobody selling fashion focused for men. What we’re trying to do is bring a more relaxed, less tailored edit to the mix.”
