High street like-for-like fashion sales increased 2.4% in the week ending 11 March as Mother’s Day provided a welcome boost.
BDO’s high street sales tracker revealed an overall fashion sales lift despite footwear sales plunging 14.2% year-on-year during the week, which was offset by a 3% rise in clothing sales.
The rise in fashion sales caused by Mother’s Day ended a seven-week negative run for fashion as 50% of respondents reported positive like-for-like sales during the week.
The jump in like-for-likes came despite tough comparatives due to a 3.5% sales increase during the same week last year.
Brighter spring weather following the Beast from the East lured shoppers out during the week, where overall footfall was up 1.4%.
The high street was the chief beneficiary as footfall rose 2.2%. Retail parks and shopping centres also benefited with footfall up 0.9% and 0.2% respectively.
