M&S restructures top fashion team

Marks & Spencer has appointed former managing director of Burton, Wes Taylor, as its new menswear director, amid wider structural changes across the fashion team.

M&S has also confirmed that Jill Stanton will be joining the retailer as womenswear and kidswear director - as exclusively revealed by Drapers last week.

Michael Kerr, currently menswear and kidswear director, is leaving the business after 35 years to pursue other career opportunities.

Queralt Ferrer, womenswear and lingerie design director, is leaving the business and moving to Amsterdam to be with her family. Consequently, responsibility for design will be integrated into the business units.

Belinda Earl, who has most recently been covering womenswear, is stepping away from her commercial role with the retailer but will continue to work in an advisory role and sit on the board of the M&S Archive. She will hand over her womenswear responsibilities to Stanton over the summer.

Both Stanton and Taylor, who join the retailer in July and May respectively, will report into clothing and home managing director Jill McDonald.

Meanwhile two internal promotions have been made in the lingerie and home divisions.

Laura Charles, head of lingerie buying, has been promoted to the new position of lingerie director, while Neil Harrison, currently home director, will also pick up responsibility for beauty.

Jill McDonald said: “M&S Clothing is transforming. We’re crystal clear on the challenge. We must become more relevant to more people offering the right products at the right prices to appeal to our core customers and attract new ones.

“Jill and Wes are highly impressive retailers with strong track records of success at other high-profile brands and will bring this invaluable experience to M&S. We now have the right leadership team in place to get on and deliver change.”

  • Delivering change is common at this retailer. Delivering success is a completely different story. Jill is building an empire of personnel with a track record. Problem is the tracks have changed. Where’s plan B?
