Parts of Ness Clothing bought out of administration

Parts of Scottish retailer and brand Ness Clothing have been acquired by Edinburgh-based property and retail group Kiltane, safeguarding more than 35 jobs.

Kiltane has bought four Ness stores in York, Keswick and two in Edinburgh, after the firm went into administration at the end of last year. Kiltane has also bought the wholesale and ecommerce divisions of Ness.

Kiltane is a specialist in luxury cashmere, fine woollens and Scottish Tweed, and plans to utilise Ness’s reach to grow within the UK and internationally.

“The addition of Ness to our existing stores builds considerably on our business infrastructure and capabilities, both in retail outlets in prime locations and online,” said Kiltane managing director Mark Keane.

“We’re very confident that the deal will deliver major value to the group in the years ahead because the Ness brand offers a strong fit for us and complements the existing brands and concessions we work with.”

Accountancy firm BDO was appointed as administrator to Ness, which had 10 stores in Scotland and five in England, as well as four concessions, on 23 December as a result of “working capital difficulties”.

The first Ness Clothing store opened in 1997 at 367 High Street in Edinburgh. When the firm entered administration, it employed 105 retail and head office staff.
