Number of indies set to grow

The number of independent retailers in the UK is forecast to creep up 0.3% by 2023, despite difficult conditions on the high street.

Indies will survive because they can be more nimble than big businesses in the face of change, according to the research by American Express and GlobalData, reported in The Telegraph.

Those anticipated to grow the most are businesses focusing on experience – beauty salons, gyms and hair salons are among those categories predicted to see the biggest rise in openings.

Maureen Hinton, group retail research director at GlobalData, noted that “the high street is in a period of unprecedented change”, with online shopping reshaping the makeup of traditional shopping spaces.
