Pitti Uomo celebrates record attendance figures

A record number of visitors turned out for the 87th edition of Pitti Uomo in Florence, its organisers have announced.

A total of 35,000 people attended the four-day menswear trade show, with as many as 24,000 buyers from across the world, up 15% from 20,800 in January 2014.

Organiser Pitti Immagine registered a 17% increase in Italian buyers and an 11% uplift in international buyers at the Fortezza da Basso on January 13-16.

Exhibitors set their own record, with the highest number of stands at 1,200, including Pitti’s smaller womenswear section, which hosted 66 brands.

Pitti Immagine chief executive Raffaello Napoleone said: “This has been a more than encouraging edition of Pitti Uomo, an excellent start to the season marked by great confidence and optimism.

“The credit for these results goes primarily to our exhibitors: with their incredible dedication to producing and presenting ever more creative and high-quality collections, they are the true stars of the fair.”

The increase in foreign buyer attendance was highlighted by show reports published by Drapers on both day two and four, as well as the brands spoken to.

“It’s been the best Pitti for about five years,” said Harry Flynn, director of knitwear brand Alan Paine. “We have had enquiries from potential new accounts in Scandinavia, Italy and Spain.”

Ann Ryley, head of sales at Scottish cashmere scarf specialist Begg & Co, reported strong-quality buyer turnout from Japan, South Korea, China, and “lots from Germany, Austria, Italy and France”. Among the many Americans seen was a full team from department store business Bergdorf Goodman.

The buoyant mood extended to buyers including Selfridges men’s buying manager for formal, casual and footwear Luke Mountain, who said: “The Central Pavilion is the best place to welcome the new fashion season. Everything is simply perfect, as usual. A comprehensive trade show, easy to tour.”

The next edition of Pitti Uomo will take place on June 16-19.
