Tesco Direct to close

Tesco has announced it will shut down its Tesco Direct website, which sells its F&F clothing brand and homewares, saying there is “no route to profitability” for the site.

The website will cease trading on 9 July 2018. The Fenny Lock fulfilment centre near Milton Keynes, which handles Tesco Direct orders, will also close. Around 500 jobs are at risk.

Tesco’s clothing offer, including the F&F brand, will instead be sold through the main Tesco website, as the supermarket focuses investment on a “single online platform”.

Tesco Direct sells the F&F men’s and women’s and children’s wear collections, alongside various home and technology products.

The decision follows a detailed review of the website, which concluded that high costs for fulfilment and online marketing prevented the it from delivering as a sustainable business.

Charles Wilson, CEO of Tesco UK and Ireland, said: “We want to offer our customers the ability to buy groceries and non-food products in one place and that’s why we are focusing our investment into one online platform.

“This decision has been a very difficult one to make, but it is an essential step towards establishing a more sustainable non-food offer and growing our business for the future.”
