As president of the fashion division at Alibaba’s ecommerce platform Tmall, Jessica Xiuyun Liu has overseen the addition of yet more brands this year, including LK Bennett and Abercrombie & Fitch. It is thought that Tmall features more than 130 UK brands in total.

Alibaba’s annual Singles’ Day promotional event on 11 November, led by Tmall, continues to dominate the Chinese shopping calendar. Its 2017 event obliterated previous records after consumers spent $25.3bn (£19bn) during the 24-hour period, marking a 39% increase on the previous year. More than 140,000 brands and merchants benefited from the shopping extravaganza, including UK brands New Look and Burberry.
As Alibaba revs up plans for global expansion, retailers are keeping an eye on whether it will extend Singles’ Day to the UK, after spreading the event to territories including Hong Kong and Taiwan last year.
In the meantime, the ecommerce company is also making a significant effort to shake off its image as a host for knock-off brands. Earlier this year, Kering dropped a lawsuit against Alibaba and the two agreed to team up to tackle counterfeit sellers.
