The Fortezza de Basso opened to buyers this morning as Pitti Uomo kicked off its autumn 14 edition. A relatively quiet morning quickly picked up around lunchtime, as buyer presence increased.
However, brands have asserted that day one has historically been a quieter day, with mostly Italian buyers, and this season has been no different.
Mads Buur, sales executive at British label YMC told Drapers “The first day is always Italian buyers, we will get British and American buyers later in the week. We have our London Collections: Men show today (Tuesday) at 5pm so we’re covering both.”
He suggested that Pitti and LC:M are more for showing off the collections while orders tend to be written in Berlin and Paris later in the season.
Greg Gassa, brand owner of French label Unity Paris, which has UK stockists including Lynx in Harrogate, said: “Pitti is the beginning of the season, you have to be here.” However, he suggested that the show dates, which are a week earlier than last year, are too early for brands to properly prepare. This view was reflected by several brands, who indicated to Drapers that they have had trouble getting all of their pieces to the show on time, particularly with Monday 6th being an Italian public holiday.
Sue Newton, PR manager at Barbour said that the show felt quieter than previous seasons but that more buyers, particularly from the UK, will come along tomorrow after London Collections: Men.
