Vibrant first day at Copenhagen trade shows

The autumn 16 editions of the Danish trade shows kicked off on Wednesday (February 3), with busy crowds and a buzzy atmosphere at CIFF, CIFF Raven and Revolver.

British buyers spotted at both shows praised the strong brand mix and upbeat mood, while exhibitors were happy with the turn out of high calibre visitors on the first day.

The sprawling CIFF and CIFF Raven shows, which cover everything from emerging menswear labels through to established contemporary and mainsteam womenswear brands (February 3-5), impressed both buyers and exhibitors with its unique layout and edit of brands.

“I think the Copenhagen shows are really good”, said Kristopher Babet, divisional merchandise manager for menswear at Urban Outfitters. “I’ve seen one new brand at CIFF that is the best brand I’ve seen in seasons. You will always see something new here.” He added: “I was at Revolver this morning which was good and busy. I do write orders here in Copenhagen, I placed two at Revolver already.”

“It’s been a really good start. The stand hasn’t been empty once,” said Vicky Hanson, country manager for womenswear label Bitte Kai Rand, which was showing in the Style Setters area at CIFF. “It’s been busy all day, but there’s still plenty of time and space to have good conversations.”

“Day one has gone really well”, agreed Katy Rutherford, co-founder of British unisex label Story, showing in the Raven Projects part of CIFF. “The space, layout and design is really incredible – the concrete and scaffolding looks great. It’s excellent that this show is so international. There’s lots of passing interest from buyers, particularly Japanese and Korean and we’ve seen some of our existing customers too.”

It was a “very, very busy” first day for Lisa Granath, international sales manager at womenswear label The Masai Clothing Company in CIFF’s Future Classics section. “We’ve had frequent visitors since 9am and so far that hasn’t slowed down. We’ve seen predominately buyers from Denmark and Norway. This show is so important for our Scandinavian customers.”

Reuben Billingham, co-founder of London menswear brand Several, said the Raven section of CIFF had been a little quieter in terms footfall, but he was still very pleased with day one. “The quality of this show takes the biscuit,” he enthused. “People really linger around this show as they’re not pushed along narrow corridors. I’ve seen some existing customers and lot of international buyers.”

“I’ve seen lots of new and unknown brands at CIFF,” said Topman’s senior assistant buyer James Emmerson. “There’s not so much here for the Topman customer but it gives a good overview of trends. Revolver was equally as busy and I saw some clear trends coming out there, such as puffa jackets everywhere and a palette of creams and beiges inspired by the whole Yeezy trend.”

This season the Copenhagen shows clash with London’s menswear exhibition Jacket Required (February 3-4). Several menswear buyers that Drapers spoke to across both shows said they would leave Copenhagen early to spend time at Jacket Required.
