Who owns the high street: Anders Holch Povlsen

Danish retail billionaire Anders Holch Povlsen has his fingers in some of fashion’s biggest pies. He upped his stake in Asos to 29.5% in 2017 and is the etailer’s biggest shareholder, followed by investment firms Capital Group Companies (10.5%) and Baillie Gifford (7.7%). Holch Povlsen also owns a 10% share in German etailer Zalando, which he bought in 2013, and is the sole owner and CEO of Danish fashion house Bestseller.

Established in 1975 in the small town of Ringkøbing by his parents, Troels Holch Povlsen and Merete Bech Povlsen, Bestseller owns 11 brands, including Jack & Jones, which has 30 UK stores. Others, including Vera Moda, Only and Selected, are wholesale.Holch Povlsen took the reins of the family business aged just 28. Bestseller has 2,700 stores across 70 markets and employs 15,000 people around the world. He also owns 1% of all the land in Scotland, including Edinburgh department store Jenners’ building on Princes Street, which he bought for £53m in 2017.
